New Zealand National Kendo Championships
The New Zealand Kendo National Championships was established in 2001. The Nationals were run on an annual basis from 2001 until 2014 (with the exception of 2003 when the Nationals were not run because of the World Kendo Championships in Glasgow Scotland). Following 2014 it was decided the Nationals would be run on a triennial basis, coinciding with the year of the World Kendo Championships. The Nationals are open to competitors who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
The Rembuden Kendo Club has a proud history at the National Championships. Particular unprecedented results include:
- Rembuden won the men's team competition in all consecutive years 2004 - 2013
- Sachiyo Lee was the Women's Champion 2001-2005.
- Rembuden Kendo Club members came first place in all events at the 2024 Nationals
- Max Lee is the youngest person to hold the individual Men’s titles at New Zealand’s major tournaments, and the only competitor to have held all titles concurrently: NZ National Men’s Champion (2024), Rembuden Taikai Senior Men’s Champion (2025, 2024), North Island Men’s Champion (2025)
